Frequently Asked Questions
What is a food waste recycling machine?
An electric food recycler is a science-based, indoor-use appliance that transforms organic food waste into a dry, malleable by-product that can be disposed of or used as a nutrient-rich soil amendment for gardening.
What foods can go in?
The FoodCycler can handle all sorts of food waste, including fruit and veggie scraps; meat, fish and poultry; coffee grounds and tea leaves; eggs and eggshells; beans, seeds and legumes; shellfish and their shells; and cheese and dairy products.
What foods can't go in?
Foods to avoid include oils and fats, beef bones, and gum and candy.
What are the benefits?
Powerful yet quiet, compact and effortless, the Eco 3 is a science-based tool for taking control of household food waste. It is designed as an elegant solution for keeping your kitchen clean, preventing odors and maintaining a more eco-friendly home. As an added bonus, it produces a nutrient-packed soil amendment for gardening.
Which FoodCycler is right for my household?
The Eco 3 is best for households of 1 to 3 people, while the Eco 5 is perfect for households of 4 or more.
How often do I need to replace the activated charcoal in the refillable filter?
On average, replace and refill the charcoal in your filter every three or four months, depending on how much you use the machine and what food scraps you put in it. If you notice smells before the three-month mark, refill it with charcoal sooner.
How long does a cycle take?
The time needed depends on the amount of food waste being processed, its density and its moisture level. A typical Eco 3 cycle takes 4–9 hours to recycle food waste into Foodilizer.
How easy is it to clean the Eco 3 bucket?
If the blades are not blocked by debris, simply keep adding your scraps and FoodCycle as usual. If dried waste is stuck to the side of the bucket, soak it in warm, soapy water to remove it.
Reviews
The FoodCycler's Eco 3 would be great for any consumer, not just those with limited kitchen space.
It's absolutely an investment to make.
When it's time to grind, you'll be glad to know it does it quietly, and its small size makes it incredibly convenient for compact living spaces like condos or cottages.

Amazing Machine. I have used my Cycler 3 times so far and it's amazing! It's hard to believe that a container of compost could end up as a few spoonfuls of dust, but it does. The Cycler is easy to use, and so quiet that you'll almost forget it's running. This has solved my compost issue 100%. I would highly recommend.

Simply Amazing!! I use my FoodCycler every other day with my family of four and it's simply amazing! One of my favourite uses: we get a rotisserie chicken from Costco every other week for lunches. When we are done, we put the WHOLE carcass in and the FoodCycler handles it, no problem at all! The only problem we have with the FoodCycler is that it makes really yummy dirt that our dog keeps trying to eat in our gardens lol. 10/10, highly recommend!
Quiet, effective and easy. We process our produce waste daily. Excellent byproduct, dry and odorless; will use as soil amendment. Highly recommended.

Excellent Product. I love to try new things and I think this is one of my best buys. I was extremely unhappy with the green bin. During summer it attracts raccoons and flies, as we have a lot of kitchen waste. In winter, garbage is a nightmare as the only place to keep the bins is the garage. All my kitchen waste – egg shells, vegetable waste, bones and plant waste – goes in this miracle machine at night. It stays in my pantry, and when the basket gets filled up, my daughter turns it on and it quietly does its job…

My new most favorite appliance! I absolutely love this new addition to my kitchen! I've only had it for a week and have already run it three times! I only filled one trash bag in the last week! There are just so many benefits to having this machine. It reduces my trash accumulation; it reduces what goes to the landfill, which reduces the production of methane gas; and it nourishes my vegetable garden. Win. Win. Win! I have already encouraged my grown children and friends to consider getting one as well…

Life. Changing. Only a week in... and this has improved my life so much! Keeping food scraps on the countertop has been a hassle for 2 years, as we don't have access to a recycling center less than 20 miles round trip and outdoor composting is not an option due to bears. I am able to fill it every day or every other day and run a cycle. There is a small amount of heat but virtually no odor. I keep it by the trash can on the floor and the bucket on the counter. Only 2 small complaints... it can be a little tricky…
To begin with, I really love the new design. I have been using the original Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50 for years, and now I also own the new FoodCycler Eco 3. It is very interesting to experience both generations side by side. The new version is noticeably quieter and the design feels much more integrated into everyday kitchen life. It has become an appliance that I actually enjoy having visible in the kitchen. The older FC-50 was more like a solid first-generation machine…
Quiet, easy to use. We had an older version for the last 6 years that finally stopped working. The new design is a great improvement over the old. We are impressed with the easy operation; it takes less time and has a turn-off feature that did not exist on the old one.
Food waste now makes me happy. The FoodCycler effectively and quietly turns food waste into what looks like instant coffee in texture, significantly reduces the volume – and it doesn't smell. Amazing product. Recommending it to all my friends!
How to keep it clean. I've used the Eco 3 for about nine months, about every 3 days. A hard crust builds up on the bottom after a few weeks. I have discovered a simple solution: when there is a crusty deposit, I simply pour in one to two ounces of water, then add the compost for treatment. Let it sit for a few hours and run the cycle. Dump the dry product and the bottom is clean. It works for me.
This is my second unit. (The old one is in storage in another province.) I got a new one as Nunavut has limited waste disposal options; due to remoteness and infrastructure, nearly everything is landfilled. So far I have run it three times without issues. I'll be interested to see if this one grinds better, as the old one got gummed up with grapes and melon. I'll see if the community greenhouse can make use of the compost to improve food security, because food is all flown in or delivered by ship…
Fantastic. We had an original Kickstarter food cycler years ago that was massive, made a lot of noise and stunk. The FoodCycler – though I've only had it two weeks – is absolutely fantastic. I am thoroughly impressed with the ease, the size, the silence and the end product.
Fantastic product. Goodbye Lomi. Hello FoodCycler. You are ever so much better. Easier to use. Quieter. Faster. The compost is always dry and not in need of processing again. We love you!
So Far So Good! I have only used this for about 4 rounds, but honestly it has worked like a charm. Simple to use and understand, quieter than my dishwasher, and it has helped take the "stink" out of my garbage, since we do not have any kind of composting program in my area. I can either collect the compost and use it where needed, or simply throw it out with the trash and there is no smell. It is fairly clean after a cycle; however, like all things, there is a bit of build-up and I simply soak it and rinse it…
Smaller footprint than my outside composters. I have been composting for about 20 years and have always used the big outside composters. It would take about 1 year for my food waste to get to the stage where it could be added to the garden. The FoodCycler will greatly reduce the use of the outside composters, and I can put the end product on my garden right away. I have only had my FoodCycler for under a month, so I will review it in more depth after 1 year.
Game changer in my kitchen. I researched this product for a year! Lol… in fact, I "sold" several of them to friends before moving into my new space and buying my own. Here in Tofino, organic disposal is an issue, along with bears. FoodCycler not only takes the smell and mess out of the daily mix, it's garden fertilizer in waiting. The Eco 3 was the perfect size too; a total no-brainer.
Facile à utiliser. Il y a moins de déchets dans la communauté.
I love this. I was on the fence about purchasing this, as it is expensive. But I absolutely hate dealing with food scraps. They stink up the kitchen sitting in the compost bin, the paper bags are a pain to get out of their holders, and sometimes the bags break open and spill rotten food all over my kitchen. So even though my city offers curbside compost pickup, I decided to bite the bullet and splurge on this machine. And I am oh-so-glad that I did. You simply dump the food scraps into the bucket…
Eco 3 Food Cycler. We live in an area where we are responsible for our own garbage. Having a Food Cycler gets rid of all our decomposable trash while providing a source of nutrient-rich soil for the garden. We only have to take our garbage out every 3 months instead of bi-weekly. We had an issue with our unit and we missed it dearly. Food Cycler replaced it at no cost!! Thanks!!
Good at grinding and dehydrating. This device does an excellent job of grinding and dehydrating organic waste into a coarse mix of low volume. It has no smell, even when open. It runs quietly and is easy to operate. It doesn't actually make compost, since compost requires organic decay and a thriving microorganism community. This is the opposite. However, if placed into a compost pile or worm box it would likely quickly compost.
Very Efficient. I use this composter 3–4 times a week and love how it reduces waste and is better for the environment!
