Giant Globes Made of Thousands of Tiny Stars
The ornamental onion is a perennial herbaceous plant with brightly colored flowers and a truly distinctive shape. Each bloom is perfectly round, like a little head, and looks wonderfully cute, while the leaves stand out in an unusual gray-green. A single flower head is made up of 2,000 to 3,000 tiny florets that look like little stars, which is why the blooms are so large.
As the florets open, the flower ball gradually grows, and a fully open head can reach 20 cm in diameter. Large, unique and brightly colored, each bloom can last for nearly 20 days, giving these giant alliums great ornamental value.
Key Features!
- Striking arrangements: sizeable globe-shaped blooms stand out in fresh flower arrangements
- Easy to grow: a pollinator attractor that is perfect for beds, borders and cottage gardens
- Star-shaped florets: numerous small star-shaped blooms form globe-shaped clusters
- Deer-resistant perennial: a wild ornamental flowering onion

Hardy in the Cold
These ornamental onions have strong cold tolerance and can withstand low temperatures of about -15°C. South of the Yangtze River they can survive the winter outdoors, while in the extremely cold northern areas they can overwinter indoors.
Feeding Your Alliums
- At planting or in spring: add slow-release fertilizer when planting, or wait until spring, after the shoots sprout, and add some slow-release fertilizer then
- During the bud stage: fertilize with Huaduoduo No. 2 once every 10 days
- After flowering: prune off the spent flowers, sprinkle on a little slow-release fertilizer, and wait until the remaining leaves turn yellow on their own as the nutrients return
After the Blooms Fade
Giant alliums have a long flowering period, blooming in late spring and early summer and slowly beginning to fade around June. The thousands of small flower buds then turn into small, plump green seeds, although sowing these seeds successfully is difficult.
Before the seeds form, you can cut the flower stems in the middle and turn the heads into flower arrangements or dried flowers to decorate every corner of your home and extend the time you can enjoy them.
A Little Legend
It is said that the giant Allium giganteum was originally a member of the royal family of Cong. Tired of the disputes, he transformed into an elf with purple hair and lived quietly in the mountains.
